Fisheries officials at a community level discussion underscored the need for enhancing fish farming through the best use of existing natural resources to increase fish production.

Referring to the immense prospect of the fisheries sector, they mentioned that fish production could easily be increased to a great extent through the best use of existing natural water resources especially major rivers and their tributaries.

Conservation of the water resources and other wetlands has become indispensable for the sake of boosting fish production to meet the national protein demand.

They made these observations while addressing the meeting to mark the releasing of fish hatchlings into Beel Sony Beel under Bagmara Upazila of the district yesterday.

Department of Fisheries under its 'Establishment of Open Water Beel and Nursery and Fingerlings Release Project' organized the event with the main thrust of boosting fish production in open water bodies.

On the occasion, 1.25 kilograms of hatchlings of native fish species like rui, katla and mrigel were released in a newly established fish nursery measuring 50 decimals of water body. Later on, the nursery will be connected with the adjacent beel.

District Fisheries Officer Golam Rabbani and Upazila Fisheries Officer Aliza Khatun addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Union Parishad Member Fazlur Rahman, in the chair.

Assistant Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Anwaruzzaman, President of Beel Sony Fishermen Cooperative Society Mamunur Rashid and its General Secretary Jakhim Uddin also spoke.

The speakers put emphasis on formulation of a tough law against dumping of ponds and other natural water bodies as the aquatic biodiversity and fish production of the area have been decreasing gradually due to various manmade and natural causes.

Besides, they recommended formulating a time-fitting policy for freeing the water resources from all sorts of pollution and contamination so that the indigenous fish species could be saved from extinction.

They stressed for bringing all water bodies, ponds, tiny water bodies, flood plains, 'beels', 'haors' and flood plains under fish cultivation using the latest technologies ensuring best use of all existing natural resources.

The chief guest Golam Rabbani called for boosting fish production and protecting natural breeding grounds, stopping catch of smaller fishes to preserve extinct and indigenous fish species for achieving self-reliance by the rural people after meeting nutritional demand.
