Nizami’s review petition hearing begins today

The Supreme Court started hearing the review petition of death-row convict war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami. The proceedings started on Tuesday at the four-member appeals bench of Nazmun Ara Sultana, Syed Mahmud Hossain and Hasan Foez Siddique. They were led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha. The hearing was initiated by Nizami’s chief counsel Khandker Mahbub Hossain placing his argument. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam shall provide his after that. Jamaat-e-Islami chief Nizami was convicted in October 2014 by the International War Crimes Tribunal for the atrocities he had committed during the War of Liberation in 1971.

He was found guilty in henious crimes like, mass murders, rapes of Bengalis and massacre of the intellectuals during the war. Jamaat-e-Islami chief Nizami filed the review petition on March 29 seeking acquittal. The International Crimes Tribunal issued his death warrant on March 15 after the Supreme Court had released its full verdict. This review petition will be the last legal battle for the war criminal.

If rejected, Nizami will have the chance to seek presidential pardon. If he does not receive it the government will carry out the death sentence and he will be hanged.
