Attorney General Mahbubey Alam today said he is hopeful that the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court will upheld its verdict that rejected an appeal filed by Jamaat chief Matiur Rahman Nizami against death sentence handed down to him by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1.

The chief law officer of the state came up with the observations while talking to newsmen after the end of hearing on review plea filed by the Jamaat Ameer.

"The defence in their hearing said the witnesses against the accused are not trustworthy and the Jamaat chief cannot be held responsible for the killings of intellectuals. We in reply said that those killings had taken place as a result of the instigating speeches of Nizami”.

"Even Al-Badr men, while detaining a doctor had said to his wife that they are taking him away on the order of Nizami. So I am hopeful that the Appellate Division will uphold its earlier order in this regard," Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said.

Attorney general also opined that the defence could not produce any new argument for the sake of reviewing the Supreme Court order.
