Proposal to make constitution a time-befitting one in AL council: Razzak

Necessary recommendation for bringing amendments in the constitution of the ruling Awami League to make it a modern and time-betting one to face the challenges of future would be suggested at the 20th national council of the country's oldest party to be organised in the capital on July 10 and 11.

Disclosing this at a press conference at the political office of Awami League president Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmondi in the city today, Convener of the Constitution Sub-committee and agriculture and cooperatives affairs secretary of Awami League Dr Abdur Razzak said, "For bringing necessary amendments to our party constitution to make it a time-befitting one, we have collected constitutions of different democratic political parties of the world."

He said that recommendations of the AL constitution sub-committee would be finalised within June 15 and the recommendation in this regard would be presented at the party national council after taking consent of Awami League president Sheikh Hasina.

Indicating that the number of posts in the Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC) might be increased, Dr Abdur Razzak, who chaired the meeting, said, "New divisions have been created in the country. Accordingly, recommendation might be there for increasing the posts of organising secretaries of our party."

Besides, he also hinted that suggestion for increasing not only the number of organising secretaries in the party constitution but also the number of posts in the party presidium and joint general secretaries might be made.

Sources close to the meeting confided to this correspondent that a decision was adopted at the meeting to send letters to presidents and general secretaries of all the upazila and district units of Awami League to inform the central office in black and white what sort of amendments they want to see in the party constitution.

AL joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-ALam Hanif, organising secretaries Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and Advocate Misbahuddin Siraj, international affairs secretary Lt Col (Retd) Faruque Khan, information and research affairs secretary Advocate Afzal Hossain, office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap and ALCWC members KM Jahangir Hossain, Abdur Rahman, RAM Ubaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, Sujit Roy Nandi, Aminul Islam Amin and Barrister Fazle Nur Tapas were present, among others.
