‘Kidnapper’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with Brahmanbaria cops

An alleged child kidnapper was killed in what police claimed a gunfight in Ashuganj area of Brahmanbaria district early today.

The deceased, Solaiman, 22, hailing from Kathalia upazila in Jhalakhati district was killed by the shots fired by his cohorts, said Badrul Alam Talukder, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashuganj Police Station.

Solaiman was arrested on charge of kidnapping one Rifat, 7, son of Bahar Mia of the upazila in Brahmanbari,a whose body was recovered ten days later, the police official said.

Acting on Solaiman’s information that one of the main accused in a case filed in this connection was hiding in Bahadurpur area of the upazila, police went to the spot with Solaiman where his cohorts started firing shots at police triggering a gunfight in retaliation, he said.

Four policemen were also injured in the alleged gunfight.

The injured police officials are: Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police of Sarail-Ashuganj circle, Moniruzzaman Fakir, officer-in-charge of Ashuganj Police Station, Badrul Alam Talukder and Sub-Inspectors (SI) Amzad Sheikh and Bapon Chakrabarty.

Police recovered a pipe gun, two rounds of bullets and a machete from the spot, the official said.
