A 24-hour general strike called by the Jamaat-e-Islami is underway across the country, with no untoward situation reported so far.

The strike began at 05:00am on Thursday and will end at 05:00am on Friday.

Law enforcement officials were on alert in the capital to avert any sabotage attempt.

Border Guard Bangladesh members were also deployed in the capital and in different parts of the country.

The strike was called in protest at the execution of Jamaat ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami.

Nizami was hanged at Dhaka Central Jail for crimes against humanity he had committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
