Election officials asked to discharge duties with utmost sincerity

Speakers at a pre-election workshop have asked the election officials and others concerned including the law enforcement agencies to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty to make the grassroots union parishad (UP) polls free and fair and meaningful. 

They said the Election Commission is committed to holding the election in a free, fair and neutral manner and urged the field level officials to perform their duties properly for materializing the EC's commitment. 

They were addressing the inaugural session of a daylong training workshop for the officials appointed for UP elections under Durgapur Upazila at Durgapur Pilot High School on Friday. 

The upazila administration organized the workshop. Additional Secretary to Election Commission Secretariat Mukhlesur Rahman addressed the session as chief guest with Akterunnahar, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, in the chair. 

Deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Kazi Ashraf Uddin, SP Nisharul Arif, deputy director of Local Government Dr Dewan Shahriar Firoj and Senior District Election Officer Syed Amirul Islam spoke as special guests.

Chief guest Mukhlesur Rahman observed that all authorities and agencies concerned including the election officials should work together for making the forthcoming election free, fair, neutral and meaningful. 

He mentioned that the local body election is very important for institutionalization of democracy side by side with reflecting the hopes and aspiration of the grassroots population. 

He said there is no alternative to make the election violence-free to ensure expected voters turnout. 

He stressed the need for a close and proper coordination among administrative officials, public representatives and law enforcers for overall security of the polling centres in the election. 

Rahman also put emphasis on requisite special security arrangement for the hard-to-reach and vulnerable polling centres.
