Voting is underway in Khulna City Corporation amid allegations and counter-allegations about violation of electoral rules and possible vote rigging by both the Awami League and the BNP.

The voting started at 8:00am and will continue until 4:00pm without any break to elect the city mayor and 41 councillors for the next five years.

People were seen spontaneously coming to polling centres and standing in long queues to cast their vote.

An hour after the voting began, BNP's mayor candidate Nazrul Islam Monju alleged that his agents were driven out from at least 30 polling centres.

“I will stay in the election race till the end of the voting. I will accept the result if the election is held peacefully. If it is rigged, people will not accept the result,” Monju came up with the allegation after casting his vote at Rahima Govt Primary School polling centre.

Besides, his supporters claimed that their polling agents were driven out from the polling centres in Khulna Zila School, Kagajibari Govt Primary School, Abu Hanifa Madrasa under ward no. 22 and Natunbazar school under ward no. 25.

After casting his vote at Pioneer Girls High School at 8:05 am, Awami League mayor candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque claimed that the voting was continuing in a peaceful manner. “People will vote for me as they want development,” he added.

Asked about the allegation of driving out BNP mayor’s agent from polling centres, Khaleque said, “It’s their problem. It’s not our problem. Voting is going on in a peaceful manner.”
