Hundreds of passengers were stuck today in a 25-kilometre tailback on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

The tailback that ensued last night stretches from the Meghna-Gomoti bridge to Kutumburpur of Chandina.

Jubayer Ahmed, a businessman who started from Dhaka was stuck at Kutumbupur for two and a half hours due to the tailback.

Jibon, officer-in-charge (OC) of Eliotganj Highway Police Outpost said that they were trying control the situation.

Huge rush of covered vans carrying  garments shipment and Ramadan supplies caused the congestion on the highway.

“Main reason for the traffic jam is vehicles are passing slowly over digital weighing scales at Daudkandi toll plaza and Meghna bridge” the OC said earlier.

Huge rush of covered vans carrying  garments shipment and Ramadan supplies is also reason behind the congestion on the highway.

Last week, a 110km-long tailback persisted on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Feni for almost five days as a result of the construction of Fatehpur rail overpass.

In a bid to ease the situation, authorities yesterday opened one lane of the overpass for vehicular movement from Chittagong side to Dhaka.

The congestion in Fatehpur receded, but it grew in Kanchpur, outskirts of Dhaka yesterday.
