Shimulia-Kanthalbari ferry services suspended again

Ferry services on Shimulia-Kanthalbari route in the Padma River under Lauhajang upazila of Munshiganj were suspended early today due to poor navigability.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) suspended the ferry services around 12:00am as it became difficult to operate ferries on the route, said its Assistant General Manager Khandaker Shah Khaled Newaz.
He said the channel has now only 5 feet water whereas it needs 7-8 feet for ferry operation.
However, dredging work is underway in the river to restore its navigability.
Earlier on Sunday, the BIWTA authorities advised heavy vehicles to avoid the route.
