The high-profile committee on road safety yesterday asked the authorities concerned to take necessary steps for bringing all roads and highways of the country under the closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to avoid road accidents.

The directives came from the first meeting of the committee formed to monitor the implementation of all activities for overall development of the country’s traffic system including Dhaka city and ensuring road safety.

Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Secretary Sajjadul Hassan presided over the meeting held at the PMO.

The committee directed the authorities concerned to undertake necessary steps for bringing all roads and highways of the country under the CCTV cameras with the assistance of local administration and local government bodies, meeting sources said.

It discussed in detail the road accidents that took place before and after the Eid-ul-Azha across the country including Dhaka as well as the overall transport management.

The committee directed the authorities concerned to bring the persons responsible for the accidents to the book.

It prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls of those who died in the road crashes and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved families. The committee also wished early recovery of the injured.

The meeting advised the authorities concerned to take effective measures to strengthen the ongoing programmes to ensure road safety across the country including Dhaka.

It also asked for strengthening the mobile court activities so that the vehicles without route permit cannot ply roads and the traffic rules are maintained properly.

The meeting took a decision to spearhead an awareness-build up programme to encourage the people in obeying the traffic rules.
