7 sentenced to death in Gazipur over 2011 murder

A Gazipur court has sentenced seven people to death for the 2011 murder of trader Milon Bhuiyan.

Gazipur District and Sessions Judge AKM Enamul Haque announced the verdict on Monday.

The death row convicts are Razeeb Hossain aka Raju, 29, Md Quayyum, 32, Md Razeeb Hossain, 29, Md Farooq Hossain, 32, Md Shafiqul Islam aka Parvez, 33, Md Ali Hossain aka Hossain Ali, 34, and Mohammad Ali aka Chhoto Ali, 27.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each. Each of them has also received 10 years in prison over another charge.

Another suspect, Masud aka Mama Masud, 35, was sentenced to five years in prison and fined Tk 10,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in a month being added to the prison sentence.

Suspects Enamul Haque, 35, and Shamsul Haque, 52, have been acquitted.

According to the Gazipur court’s public prosecutor Md Hares Uddin Ahmed, trader Milon Bhuiyan was travelling from Sreepur to his home in East Chandana on the night of Feb 26, 2011 when he was attacked by a group of 10-12 robbers who hacked him to death.

The victim’s uncle, Akhtar Hossain, filed a case against 8-10 suspects at the Joydebpur Police Station the following day.

Seven of the suspects were arrested while the others are at large.
