Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to inaugurate the reopening of prominent five-star hotel InterContinental Dhaka on Thursday.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister AKH Shahjahan Kamal confirmed the reopening date of the InterContinental Dhaka at a press conference at his secretariat office in the city on Wednesday.

Since the start of its journey in 1966, this five-star hotel had been operated under many names, such as ‘InterContinental Dhaka’, ‘Hotel Sheraton’ and ‘Ruposhi Bangla’. The hotel is now getting back its first name ‘InterContinental Dhaka’.

Sheraton started operating the InterContinental Dhaka in 1987. In 2011, the hotel was renamed as ‘Ruposhi Bangla’ after Bangladesh Services Limited (BSL) under Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism took over the hotel after Sheraton closed its operation in Bangladesh after a long stay of 27 years.

Bangladesh Services Ltd (BSL) in 2013 signed a 30-year management agreement with global hotel chain InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) for the InterContinental Dhaka. The renovation work began in 2014. Though the renovation was scheduled to be completed by 2016, the completion of the renovation took two more years.

The hotel previously had a total of 270 rooms, but the number of guest rooms will come down to 226 in the renovated facility. Of those, there will be 201 executive rooms, five superior suites, 10 deluxe suites, five diplomatic suites and five presidential suites.
