The law enforcers have taken multi-tier security measures in the capital to ensure smooth observance of Holy Ashura scheduled to be held on Friday.

“Although there is no specific threat targeting Imambara of Husaini Dalan, taught security measures have been initiated,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia told reporters after inspecting the security arrangements in the old part of the city on Tuesday.

Holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), will be observed across the country on Friday (September 21).

Members of Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC), SWAT, bomb disposal units and dog squads will remain alert alongside other law enforcement agencies including plainclothes police in these areas, said the DMP chief.

The processions which will begin from Imambara will be cordoned off by police and no one will be allowed to join a moving procession from outside, he said, adding that this initiative has been taken to prevent any kind of sabotage act.

Lethal and sharp objects like knives and sword will not be allowed in the procession as well as firecrackers will remain banned during the event.

Everyone has to enter Hoseni Dalan area only after security screening through hand metal detectors and archways, he added.

Meanwhile, the DMP commissioner requested people to cooperate with the law enforcers and volunteer groups to make the procession successful.
