Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Thursday said the rule of law and democracy are complementary to each other, and the basic rights of people cannot flourish without that.

The Chief Justice came up with the remarks at a programme arranged marking the inauguration of a new building of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court here.

“To establish the rule of law, the three organs of the state must work together. The joint efforts of these three organs will contribute to overall development of the country,” he said.

Referring to judicial backlog, Mahmud Hossain said the number of cases is increasing every year but their disposal rate is very low for lack of judges and infrastructure.

Besides, the Chief Justice said, there is a tendency not to utilise the working hours of court properly.

Chaired by Cumilla District and Sessions Judge Shamsul Alam, the programme was addressed, among others, by Law Minister Anisul Huq.
