Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, MP, said yesterday that militancy and terrorism were enemies of women's empowerment. "They want to subjugate women and make them second- class citizens," he added.

The minister was speaking as the chief guest at a seminar organized by Kurigram Rural Women Development Center (KRDC) at the National Press Club here yesterday.

The information minister further said that women could only be empowered if four strategic conditions were met. The terms were right to property, education, work and access to power.

Inu said that women must discard superstition and bigotry and gain access to the fountainheads of power. But then, he added, that if women were to attain these goals men would have to be supportive, as well.

The minister said that communal bigots wanted to make women powerless and that without the empowerment of women development of a healthy, secular and prosperous society was not possible.

Inu also said constitutionally women are at par with men in Bangladesh but then it was not enough. It was necessary to secure the other spring wells of power.

The meeting was chaired by Ms. Beauty Rani, president of the KRDC.
