A Dhaka court today fixed January 30 for delivering verdict in the Eskaton double murder case filed against Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of former Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan.

Judge Md Monjurul Imam of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka fixed the date after completion of arguments from both sides.

During today’s hearing, defence lawyer Kazi Nazibullah Hiro told the court that prosecution has failed to prove the charges against his client, adding that he sought acquittal of his client.

On the other hand, additional public prosecutor SM Zahid appealed to the court for the capital punishment for the accused as the charges brought against the accused were proved.

On April 10, another Dhaka court had set May 8 for delivering verdict in the case. However, the case was transferred to the court of Judge Md Monjurul Imam as the previous court felt embarrassed to hear the case.

On April 13, 2015, a heavily intoxicated Rony fired gunshots from his car in Dilu Road of New Eskaton in the capital, injuring rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and auto-rickshaw driver Yakub, who succumbed to their injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 15 and April 23 respectively.

Hakim's mother Monowara Begum filed a murder case.

On July 21, 2015, detectives pressed murder charges against Rony and cleared his driver from the charges. Rony landed in jail after a Dhaka court on July 2, 2015, rejected his bail petition.
