High Court rejects writ challenging oath-taking of MPs

The High Court on Thursday rejected the writ filed seeking its directives to revoke the oath of the elected members of the 11th parliament.
The HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal passed the order after hearing the petition.
Earlier on Wednesday, the High Court fixed today (Thursday) for delivering the judgment in the incident.
Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Taherul Islam Tawhid filed the writ on Monday seeking its directives to revoke the oath of the MPs of the 11th parliament, citing they were sworn in illegally before the expiry of the 10th parliament.
As per the writ, the Speaker administered oath to the new MPs on January 3 following publication of a gazette which is the violation of section 123(3) of the constitution as they were sworn in before the expiry of the 10th parliament.
The five-year tenure of the 10th parliament was supposed to end on January 28.
The Speaker, Chief Election Commissioner and Cabinet Secretary were made respondents to the writ which sought court's directives to issue gazette after cancelling the oath.
