Thakurgaon clash: BGB files cases against 250 villagers

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) filed two cases with Haripur police on Thursday night against more than 250 villagers over Tuesday’s clash that left three people dead.

Nayeb Subedar Ziaur Rahman, company commander of Thakurgaon BGB 50 Battalion’s Betna border outpost, filed the cases.

One of them accuses three men of smuggling cattle from India. But Md Amiruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Haripur Police Station, declined to disclose the suspects’ names. The other one accuses 250 people, including two men killed in the clash.

Thakurgaon BGB 50 Battalion Commanding Officer Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud confirmed filing of the cases.

OC Amiruzzaman said the cases accuse the villagers of obstructing state law enforcement, attacking BGB troopers, attempt to snatch firearms and damage weapons, trying to kill the border troopers, among others.

“We have accepted the cases,” the police officer said. “Further steps will be taken after we get directives from Thakurgaon police superintendent.”

Three people, including a Secondary School Certificate examinee, were killed and at least 16 others injured after BGB members opened fire during, what the paramilitary force claimed, a clash with cattle smugglers.

The incident took place at Bahrampur village in Haripur upazila.

Fourteen injured villagers are undergoing treatment at Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital in Dinajpur while another is being treated at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
