4 ‘drug traders’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfights’

Four suspected drug traders were killed in alleged gunfights with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police in Teknaf Upazila on early Friday.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said two ‘drug traders’ were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Hoaingkong around 5am.

The deceased were identified as Najir Ahmed, 33, son of Abdul Jalil of Jaliapara, and Gias Uddin, 24, son of Hazi Zakaria of Nayapara of the upazila.

A police team conducted a drive in the area acting on a tip-off. When they reached the spot, the criminals opened fired, triggering a gunfight, the OC said.

Later, police recovered two bodies, OC Pradip said. Four policemen, including two sub-inspectors, were injured in the incident.

Police also recovered three firearms, four bullets and 6,000 yaba pills from the spot.

In a separate incident, two suspected drug traders were killed in an alleged gunfight with BGB troopers at Kharangkhali.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

A team of BGB-2 raided the area around 4am after being tipped off about the smuggling of a huge consignment of yaba, said Lieutenant Colonel Asaduzzaman.

“The smugglers opened fire on the BGB team as soon as they reached the spot, triggering a skirmish,” he claimed. “Later, the bodies of two drug traders were recovered from the spot.”

One lakh yaba pills were recovered, the BGB official said.
