Man held with 20 gold bars at Benapole

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a suspected gold smuggler along with 20 gold bars from Amrakhali area here Wednesday.

The arrestee was identified as Jikrul Islam, 40, son of Alek Mollah, hailing from Lohagara upazila of Narail. 

Lt Col Salim Reja, commanding officer of BGB-49 battalion, said a BGB team conducted a drive around 11am acting on a tip-off and arrested Jikrul.

“The seized bars are worth an estimated Tk 1.15 crore,” he said. “Jikrul was trying to smuggle them to India”

The gold was deposited to Benapole customs warehouse. A case was filed in this connection.
