Jatiya Oikyafront on Friday postponed its Saturday’s scheduled human chain programme in the city due to Banani’s FR Tower deadly fire incident that killed 25 people.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the steering committee of the alliance at Gono Forum’s central office, Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna told UNB.

“Our meeting expressed deep shock at the loss of many lives in the fire incident. The entire nation has got stunned over the incident which took place duet to the government’s negligence. Under the circumstances, we ‘ve decided to postpone our tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) human chain programme,” he said.

He said they will stage the programme at a convenient time later.

On March 21, the alliance announced to form a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club at 3pm on March 30 to push for its various demands, including the annulment of gas-tariff hike proposal.

Manna said they still could not book the auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) for holding their scheduled discussion on Sunday, marking the Independence Day.

He said they will try to arrange the discussion on the same day at an alternative venue if they finally fail to book the IEB auditorium.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president ASM Abdur Rob, BNP standing committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Gono Forum executive president Subrata Chowdhury and general secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu were, among others, present at the meeting.
