BTRC deactivates 21 lakh illegal SIMs

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on early Friday morning deactivated some 21 lakh illegal SIMs.

According to BTRC sources, there were nearly 21 lakh additional SIMs which were registered exceeding the permissible limit of 15 mobile connections against every national identity card.

Earlier, BRTC, the telecom regulator made a list of the illegal SIMs numbering 2,049,927 and urged the mobile operators to deactivate the connections by today (April 26).

As per BTRC directives, mobile operators companies of the country deactivated nearly 21 lakh SIM cards.

Of these deactivated SIM cards, there were 4,61,261 of Grameenphone, 4,55,831 of Banglalink, 4,19,202 of Robi, 2,25,741 of Airtel and 4,87,892 of Teletalk.

Earlier in November 2017, the BTRC instructed the telecom operators not to register more than 15 SIM cards against a NID card, scrapping an earlier provision that allowed an individual to own 20 SIM cards.
