The Prime Minister mentioned that Bangladesh is one of the largest troop-contributing nations in UN peacekeeping missions.

Bangladeshi peacekeepers have been working relentlessly to establish peace and harmony in various conflict zones in the world, she said.

“They’re highly praised worldwide for their high standard of professionalism, devoted service, hard work, dedication and courage for the establishment of world peace and harmony,” said the Prime Minister.

He said the government, in pursuing diplomatic objectives, has been consistent in upholding the principle of ‘Friendship to all, malice towards none’ as enunciated by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The President said Bangladesh has now been emerged as a country of peace and communal harmony around the world.

He mentioned the peacekeepers of Bangladesh have been able to attain credibility by dint of their highest standard of professionalism, devotion and bravery since their first engagement to UN Peacekeeping operations in 1988. “The outstanding contribution of our Peacekeepers has upheld the image of Bangladesh at international arena.”

He said utmost sincerity along with professionalism of our Peacekeepers has been playing a vital role in achieving the glory.

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, 29 May, offers a chance to pay tribute to the uniformed and civilians personnel’s invaluable contribution to the work of the organisation and to honour more than 3,800 peacekeepers who have lost their lives serving under the UN flag since 1948, including 98 last year.

The theme for this year’s Day is ‘Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace’ to mark the upcoming 20th anniversary when for the first time the Security Council explicitly mandated a peacekeeping mission (UNAMSIL in Sierra Leone) to protect civilians.
