A road stretching for at least 120 meterson the bank of Dharla River in Wapda Bazar area has collapsed, disconnecting people of four villages in Lalmonirhat.

Our correspondent reports the road collapsed on Wednesday evening due to erosion caused by the Dharla. The four villages -ShiberKuthi, Dharmapal, Boalmari and Char Kharua are home to 4,000 people.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Abu Jafor expressed his agitation due to the apathy of the Roads and Highway Department and Water Development Board over the incident.
He said also, “Unplanned sand lifting from Danteer embankment area caused the road collapse.”

Roads and Highway Department and local sources said there was a culvert at ShiberKuthi village which was closed due to renovation works onthe road. Huge pressure of water after recent rains and upstream water flow cause breakage on the 120 meter road.

Farmer MdLal Mia of ShiberKuthi village said, “We are completely blocked now and have nowhere to go for livelihood.”

Kulaghat Union Parishad ChairmanMdIdris Ali saidconstant rain over the last three days added to upstream waterflowfrom India created huge pressure and weakened the structure of the road.

The District Administration began the repair workson Thursday, and will take four to five days before vehicle movements can resume along the route, Idris added.

Lalmonirhat Roads and Highway Office’s Executive Engineer Ali Nunayen said, “It is not possible to reconstruct the road right now. We are making temporary fence with bamboo and dropping sacks filled with sand.”

It will take some days to fully complete repairing the road, he added.
