‘Drug trader’ killed in Dhaka ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Uttarkhan area of the city early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Md Anwar Hossain, 28. He was accused in 16-17 narcotics cases filed with different police stations in the city, Rab said.
Md Quamruzzaman, Company Commander of Rab-1 and senior assistant superintendent of police, said tipped off that a group of drug peddlers gathered at Shahidnagar, a Rab team conducted a drive there around 1:55am.
Sensing their presence, the drug pushers opened fire on them, forcing the elite force members to fire back in self-defence that triggered a gunfight, he said.
After the gun battle, bullet-hit Anwar was found lying on the ground, the Rab officer said, adding that he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
A Rab member was also injured in the incident, he claimed, adding that they recovered 3,000 Yaba pills, a short gun and six cartridges from the spot.
