Dengue prevention: Sample of new insecticide to arrive in a day or two

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam today said that the sample of insecticide for effective control of Aedes mosquito in Dhaka will be brought from abroad by a day or two.

“We will bring the sample of the insecticide ourselves from abroad by tomorrow or the day after,” the DNCC mayor said this while addressing a programme in the capital’s Uttara area this noon.

The High Court yesterday directed the two Dhaka city corporations for importing effective insecticide to eliminate mosquitoes in the capital.

The HC also came up with an order for the government to support the two city corporations after a dispute brewed between the two parties over who would bring the insecticide.

Complying with the HC directives, Atiqul said, “From now on, we, ourselves will be able to purchase the pesticides to kill mosquito. The standard of the medicine will be ensured by concerned authorities of the government.”

On completion of examining of the effectiveness of the sample, the medicine will be imported as early as possible, the DNCC mayor said, adding that he is prepared to accept suggestions from any expert of any other country to tackle the mosquito outbreak.

Assuring the city dwellers not to be worried, Atiqul said, “There is no lack of sincerity from our part to deal with the issue. We will have to work 365 days to prevent the mosquito menace.”

Calling upon all to come forward for tackling the dengue situation through united efforts, the mayor said the mobile court of the city corporation is engaged in carrying out drives at different establishments to ensure that house owners are eliminating the mosquito breeding grounds from their premises.  

“Now, the mobile court will conduct drives at houses and legal action will be taken against the house owners if existence of mosquito breeding ground is found inside their houses,” he said.

The DNCC and the Ministry of Youth and Sports jointly inaugurated the mosquito eradication campaign, dividing the city area into 10 zones.

Around 600 volunteers of the Directorate of Youth Development will lend their hands to make the efforts successful.

The mayor also requested all ward committees, local executive officials, scout boys, students and local voluntary organisations to work collectively to fight the mosquito menace in the city areas.
