Modi praises religious harmony in Bangladesh

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Thursday highly acclaimed her counterpart Sheikh Hasina’s “zero tolerance” policy against any sorts of terrorism and religious extremism and called Bangladesh a role model for religious harmony as home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal called on him in New Delhi.

“The experts should visit Bangladesh to witness the religious harmony under which Bangladeshi people are living together with peace,” a Bangladesh high commission statement quoted Modi as saying during the call on.

It said he simultaneously appreciated Bangladesh’s policy of not allowing use of its territory by extremists and insurgents for perpetrating violence in other countries including India.

According to the statement the Rohingya issue also featured Kamal’s meeting with the Indian premier when Modi said India had already raised the issue with the Myanmar authority as New Delhi thought the crisis must be solved.

He assured the Bangladesh minister to discuss the matter again with Myanmar to ensure smooth and peaceful repatriation of the Rohingyas.

The statement said the Indian premier also congratulated Sheikh Hasina for her reelection as Bangladesh prime minister for third consecutive term.

Kamal arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday to attend the 7th Bangladesh-India home minister level talks held here On Wednesday.

About border management issue, the Indian premier assured Kamal that the two countries would work together for a secured and effective border by combating drug smuggling and cross-border terrorism.

He also opined that BIMSTEC could play a crucial role for maintaining peace and development in the region.

Modi expressed his country’s eagerness to be a partner of the programmes undertaken by Bangladesh government to observe the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Bangladesh high commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali, home secretary (public safety division) Mostafa Kamal Uddin, secretary (protection division) Mohammad Shahiduzzaman and inspector general of police Mohammad Javed Patwari were present during the meeting.
