Dengue claims two more lives in Chattogram, Khulna

A woman and a man died of dengue at hospitals in Chattogram and Khulna on Saturday.

In Khulna, 45-year-old housewife Shilpi Aktar, wife of Saheb Ali of Athalia village of Terokhada upazila, died at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) in the afternoon.

KMCH Residential Physician Dr Shailendranath Biswash confirmed the death. 

Shilpi was admitted to the hospital on Friday and was later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the morning.

In Chattogram, Badsha Molla, 55, of Jafrabad area of Sitakunda died at Park View Hospital in the city. Dr Nurul Haider, medical officer (disease control) of Civil Surgeon office, said Badsha died of dengue around 5am.

Park View Hospital’s in-charge (Special Unit) A Arafat said Badsha was admitted there on August 22.

Bangladesh witnessed a massive outbreak of dengue this year. Between January 1 and Saturday morning, 70,195 people were hospitalised with the mosquito-borne disease. Of them, 65,150 were discharged after recovery, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

In 24 hours till this morning, the government said 760 new patients were hospitalised. Currently, 8,860 dengue patients are being treated at hospitals – 2,696 of them in Dhaka. 

Since the beginning of this year, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) received complaints of 185 dengue-related deaths. It has so far reviewed 96 cases and confirmed that 57 of them were caused by dengue.
