2 Rohingyas among three killed in separate ‘gunfights’

Three people including two Rohingyas were killed in what the police called gunfights in Teknaf and Kushtia on early Friday.

The Rohingya men were suspected of being involved in the recent murder of a Jubo League leader, Omar Faruk, in Teknaf, according to the police.

The deceased were identified as Abul Karim, 24, son of Jamir Ahmed; and Nesar Ahmed alias Nesar ‘Dacoit’, 29, son of Syed Hossain of Nayapara Rohingya camp.

The miscreants opened fire at police when they conducted a drive at Jadimura Hill area around 2:00am acting on a tip-off that triggered a gunfight, said Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station.

Karim and Nesar, injured in the skirmish, were arrested from the spot, but they succumbed to their injuries while being taken to the Sadar Hospital, the OC said further.
Two guns and seven bullets were recovered from the spot.

Incidentally, Jubo League leader Faruk, 30, was shot dead at Jadimura on 22 August. His family alleged that he was picked up by a group of Rohingyas and murdered.

Five Rohingya men, suspected of being involved in the murder, have been killed in alleged shootout since then.

Bangladesh is currently hosting more than 1.1 million Rohingyas who fled their homeland in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Many Rohingyas have been accused of getting involved in criminal activities in and around the camp areas.

Apart from reported attacks on police and harassment of journalists, two other locals were also killed, allegedly by Rohingyas, since the 2017 influx.

In Kushtia, a suspected drug dealer was killed in an alleged gunfight among police and two groups of ‘drug peddlers’ at Mollateghoria Kanalpara in Sadar upazila on early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Sujon Malitha, 30, son of Ismail Malitha of Takimara village in the upazila.

Sujon was wanted in several criminal cases, said police.

Miscreants opened fire at police as a patrol team went to the spot hearing sounds of gunshots around 2:00am that triggered a shootout, said Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kushtia Model Police Station.

Sujon’s body was recovered after the gunfight, the OC added. 

A pistol, a bullet, 50 bottles of phensedyl and 300 yaba pills were also recovered from the spot.
