10 former BCL leaders remanded over Abrar’s death

A Dhaka court placed ten former leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) unit on five-day remand in a case lodged over beating fellow student Abrar Fahad to death on early Monday.

The accused are-Mehedi Hasan Rasel, Muhtasim Fuad, Anik Sarker, Ifti Mosharraf Sokal, Sefayetul Islam Jiyon, Ishtiaq Munna, Khandaker Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir, Mozahidur Rahman, Muntamir Al Jemmy and Mehedi Hasan Robin.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury passed the order as investigation officer produced the accused before court and pleaded to place them on 10-day remand.

BUET students and the varsity authorities found Abrar, 22, in critical condition from first-floor stairs of Sher-e-Bangla Hall at the wee hours of October 7 and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead at around 6.30am.

His father filed the case with Chawkbazar Police Station against 19 people.

Meanwhile, BCL in a swift move expelled its 11 leaders BUET unit on October 7 over their alleged link to the death of Abrar.

The expelled leaders are – BUET unit general secretary Mehedi Hasan Rasel, vice-president Muhtasim Fuad, organising secretary Mehedi Hasan Robin, information and research secretary Anik Sarker, sports secretary Sefayetul Islam Jiyon, literature secretary Moniruzzaman Monir, social service secretary Ifti Mosharraf Sokal, deputy office secretary Mujtaba Rafid and members Muntasir Al Jemmi, Ehtemamul Rabbi Tanim and Mujahidur Rahmam.
