The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Moynul Haque Manju, the councillor of ward No. 39 under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) along with alcohol and firearms from his office in Tikatuli area of the capital.

The elite force arrested Manju on Thursday noon.

Lt Col Shafi Ullah Bulbul, commanding officer of RAB-3, confirmed the news.

Monju, an 'honorary member' of the Awami League's Wari unit, grabbed the headlines at different times for alleged extortion at Tikatuli's Rajdhani Supermarket and New Rajdhani Supermarket, land grabbing and running a drug trade.

But Monju, who was also a member of the ruling party's Dhaka metropolitan committee, once again came under the spotlight after the government launched a drive to eliminate corruption within the ranks of the Awami League and its affiliate organisations.

Expressing their satisfaction at the news of DSCC ward councillor Moinul Haque Manju’s arrest, a group of businessmen on Thursday brought out a joyous rally in Tikatuli area of the city.

Shop owners of the capital's Rajdhani Super Market and New Rajdhani Super Market distributed sweets following the arrest.
