Prime Minister opens councils of Awami League

Two chapters of the Dhaka City Awami League have been inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League president, opened the council on Saturday morning with the release of pigeons and balloons at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan.

Also present on the dais was the Secretary-General of the Awami League and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.

The councils ' second session will take place at the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh, early afternoon to elect new leadership.

Both preparations have already been made for the council meetings. Suhrawardy Udyan is adorned with numerous portraits of party workers, councilors, delegates and the whole place is lit, painted and exhibited.

A huge stage was erected at Suhrawardy Udyan to mark the council session.

Incumbent AKM Rahmatullah president and Dhaka North City AL general secretary Sadeq Khan are trying hard to retain their posts.

Other committed politicians, including Vice Presidents Sheik Bazlur Rahman and Aslamul Haque, Joint Secretaries MA Kader Khan and SM Mannan Kochi, and Habib Hasan, Secretary of Office M Saifullah Saiful, and Treasurer Wakil Uddin, are also eyeing top posts.

In addition, Dhaka South City President AL Abul Hasnat is out of the race due to his physical condition, but Secretary General Shahey Alam Murad is trying to retain his post.

Sources said that appointing Old Dhaka chief in one of the top two posts becomes a tradition.

Omar Bin Abdul Aziz Tamim, the son of former acting president late MA Aziz, is in top of the other contestants.

In addition, Vice Presidents Abu Ahmed Mannafi and Humayun Kabir, Joint Secretaries Abul Bashar and Dilip Kumar Roy, Secretary Hedayet Ullah Swapan and Secretary of Marketing Akter Hossain are seeking to get their top posts back.

Awami League's last council was convened in 2012 on December 27, but the body was revealed in 2016 on April 10 after being separated into two divisions in 2015.
