Mentioning that the tendency to make money has now become a disease, on Saturday Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina renewed her vow to continue the ongoing drive against corruption and drugs.

Greed became a disease to accumulate wealth. It's sickening... we want to get respect from those who live life with honest money, "she said.

Addressing the Bangladesh Awami League (AL) triennial council of Dhaka North and South City districts, the Prime Minister said, "People's hard-earned money will be spent on ensuring people's welfare, not on anyone's lavish lifestyle."

Referring to the imprisonment of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, Sheikh Hasina said many people are attempting to give political color to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's incarceration on charges of corruption.

"It's not a case of politics... it's a case of corruption. But a lot of people want to color it ideologically. With no political motive, we filed any case against her, "she said.

The council was opened by Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the AL, by hoisting the national flag and releasing pigeons and balloons in the morning at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the city.

The Prime Minister said money came for orphans in Khaleda's situation, but they didn't get it as it was deposited in the account of Khaleda Zia.

He said the caretaker government, backed by the military, filed the case against her for misappropriating the money of the orphans. "In that case, she is now in jail."

Earlier, the Prime Minister blamed the BNP leaders and supporters for vandalizing buses in front of the High Court, saying they did it out of nowhere abruptly. "BNP men's this isn't new...they've got the habit of doing things like that," she said.

Referring to the violence perpetrated by BNP in 2013, 2014 and 2015, Hasina said that BNP activists have repeatedly attacked the people of the country and their properties.

The Prime Minister said that this is the fact that the country has made progress during the reign of the Awami League, and it is going forward and it should.

Referring to the torture and repressive actions committed against AL men and general people in the past during BNP regimes, she said the goal of her government is to change people's fate and improve their lifestyle by protecting them from the hands of those who resort to terrorist acts, torture and killing and sit on people's shoulders as a curse.

AL Secretary General and Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader and President of AL Dhaka North City AKM Rahmatullah also spoke at the council headed by President Haji Abul Hasnat of Dhaka South City AL.

Dhaka North City AL Secretary General Sadeq Khan put the report on the Dhaka city of AL, while it was moderated by Dhaka South City AL Secretary General Shahe Alam Murad.

Mayor Sayeed Khokon of Dhaka South City Corporation and Mayor Atiqul Islam of Dhaka North City Corporation are present among others.

On December 27, 2012, the last council of the Dhaka City Awami League was held.

Ziaur Rahman, HM Ershad and Khaleda Zia were attacked by Sheikh Hasina for supporting Bangabandhu killers and anti-liberation movements.

He said that Awami League was always attacked by those who came to power through murders, coups, and conspiracies.

The Prime Minister said on February 15, 1996, Khaleda Zia held an election where there may not have been two percent votes cast.

Snatching people's votes, Khaleda Zia declared the prime minister herself, but within a month and a half she was forced to step down, Hasina recalled.

Taking a swipe at BNP leaders for raising questions against the last general election, she said, "It is not decent for those at least who held the February 15-like election to raise any questions about polls." Hasina also mentioned the questionable elections that took place during Ziaur Rahman's regime, including referendums, presidential and parliamentary elections.

He said that BNP and Jatiya Party were formed to legitimize unconstitutional power, and the two parties did not develop from the grassroots. But as a community, Awami League has evolved as it was formed to emancipate people from poverty and injustice and boost their status with an ideology and dream, Hasina said. She said Bangabandhu Nation father Sheik Mujibur Rahman had led a simple life and devoted his life to people's welfare.

Pointing at the members and activists of the AL, the President of the AL asked them to lead a life that upholds the ethos and strives for the welfare of people imbued with the spirit of commitment that the nation's father made during his life.
