Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called for a 12-hour hartal in Dhaka city from 6:00 am on Sunday after rejecting the results of the elections to the Dhaka south and north city corporations.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, secretary general of BNP, made the announcement of the dawn-to-dusk hartal across the city at a media briefing at the party headquarters in the city’s Nayapaltan area on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Awami League mayoral candidates took lead in both Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in the counting of votes in the elections to the two city cities.

According to unofficial results, AL mayoral runner Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh got 278,193 votes while BNP’s Ishraque Hossain polled 142,975 in 713 centres out of total 1,150 in DSCC.

Earlier, balloting in the DNCC and DSCC elections started at 8:00 am and continued till 4:00 pm amid ‘low voter turnout’ and reports of sporadic violence and allegations of BNP agents being driven out of polling stations.

BNP standing committee members Abdul Moeen Khan, Mirza Abbas, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Begum Selima Rahman, organising secretary Imran Saleh Prince, among others, were present at the briefing.
