The newly elected Dhaka South and North City corporations mayors and councillors took oath on Thursday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in Shapla Hall at 10:30 a.m. in the capital.

The newly elected mayors and councilors, though, will have to wait until mid-May to take over the lead as the five-year term of DSCC's current public representatives ends on May 17, while that of DNCC expires on May 13 next.

On February 1st the DSCC and DNCC polls were held. Awami League-backed candidates-Barrister Sheik Fazle Noor Taposh and Atiqul Islam-swept the election as the capital's residents elected their mayors to hold the DSCC and DNCC offices for the next five years.

In addition, Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Md Tazul Islam administered the oath of offices to councilors from the general wards and reserved women's seats at the same venue in the two town corporations.

In addition to the two elected mayors, 100 councilors–75 general councilors from 75 wards and 25 female councilors from 25 reserved seats–were elected to DSCC and 72 councilors–54 general councilors from as many wards and 18 female councilors from 18 reserved seats–were elected to DNCC.

A Notification to the Gazette was issued on February 4. Any mayor or councillor of the city corporation has a formal obligation to take oath within one month after the printing of the gazette.
