A writ petition has been filed with High Court challenging a mobile court order that sentenced journalist Ariful Islam Rigan for one year on the charge of ‘possessing narcotics’.

Executive Editor of Bangla Tribune Harun Ur Rashid filed the petition with the concerned department of the High court.

The HC bench of Justice Justice Md Ashraful Kamal and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir may hold hearing on the application, Lawyer Ishrat Hassan said.

Earlier on Saturday, a mobile court sentenced the journalist to one year in jail and fined him Tk50,000 for possession of liquor and hemp.

Ariful, Kurigram district correspondent for Dhaka Tribune and online news portal Bangla Tribune, was jailed after he criticized the district administration in a report on May 19 last year.

His report highlighted Kurigram's Deputy Commissioner Sultana Pervin's purported intention to name a government pond in the town after herself following its renovation.
