Khulna doctor dies in attack by patient's relatives

A doctor in Khulna died of a head injury at Sheikh Abu Naser Hospital in Khulna on Tuesday evening.

The deceased was identified as Dr Rakib Uddin, 59, Director of Raisa Clinic in Khulna city, was allegedly injured by an attack carried out by some relatives of a patient on Monday night. He was also the Principal of Medical Assitant Training School (MATS) in Bagerhat.

According to family members and sources, Dr Rakib came under an attack by some relatives of a pregnant woman who died on Monday night after a Caesarean section delivery.

Dr Rakib’s younger brother Saiful Islam, Lecturer of Khulna Model School and College, told media that Sheuly Begum, wife of Abul Ali of Pallabi Road in Mohammad Nagar of the city admitted to Raisa Clinic on Sunday (June 14) for a Caesarean section delivery.

Around 5:00 pm on that day, Sheuly Begum went under a C Section operation there and gave birth of a child. Both were fine and healthy. On next morning (Monday) she was shifted to Khulna Medical College and Hospital due to bleeding. But her bleeding could not be controlled and was referred to Dhaka. However, Sheuly died on Monday night on the way to Dhaka.

“The CCTV footage showed Sheuly’s relatives Kuddus, Arif, Sabur and some other people attacked on my brother Dr Rakib Uddin at around 8:50 pm on Monday (June 15). He was hit by sticks, kicked and beaten by the attackers,” said Saiful Islam adding that his brother got head injury in that attack.

Dr Rakib was taken to Gazi Medical College Hospital first but later he was shifted to Sheikh Abu Naser Hospital as his condition deteriorated and was put in Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Later, he died there at around 6:30 pm on Tuesday.

Dr Bidhan Chandra Goshwami, Director of the hospital said that he died of a brain haemorrhage due to a head injury.
