The Wari region in the capital is entering a 21 day lockdown from Saturday morning as it has been declared a red zone for coronavirus by the authorities concerned.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) decided to lock down the area for further coronavirus spread in the city.

Wari's Tipu Sultan Road, Jahangir Road, Dhaka-Sylhet Highway from Baldha Garden to Joy Kali Temple, Lalmini Street, Hare Road, War Road, Rankin Road and Nawab Road has been listed by the Health Directorate as high-risk 'red zones' where lockdown restrictions will be implemented.

Wari is the second region in the capital to go into lockdown after similar restrictions on East Rajabazar have been imposed.

It is part of a renewed push to contain the disease as coronavirus cases and deaths continued to surge after a general two-month shutdown on May 31 ended.

"We will take 21 days to properly enforce the lockdown in Wari. From 4 to 25 July the restrictions will be effective," said DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

During the lockdown, only two roads can be connected to the area.

Although pharmacies will remain open, food items and other daily essentials will have to be purchased online.

The authorities are also taking measures to treat infected patients and setting up an isolation centre at its Dhaka Metropolitan General Hospital, said Taposh.
