In a small hamlet where she was born, Sheikh Hasina spent most of her childhood. There she began her education. In 1954, when Bangabandhu became a parliamentarian, his family moved into Dhaka.

She was admitted to Sher-e-Bangladesh Girls School and College and then she graduated in 1965 from Azimpur Girls High School. She then went to the Government Girls College in Badrunnessa.
Sheikh Hasina was elected vice president of the Eden Girls College student union during her bachelor course. She subsequently enrolled in the Masters program at Dhaka University Bengali Department.

As a student leader, she participated actively in the 1966 six-point movement and in the 1969 student movement, where General Ayub Khan was abdicated. She married Wazed Miah, a nuclear scientist, in 1967.

Sheikh Hasina and her family were imprisoned at a house in Dhaka during the country's Liberation War. Sajeeb Wazed Joy was born on the 27th of July in 1971. Saima Wazed Hossain Putul, her second child, was born on December 9, 1972.

Sheik Hasina and her family were given political asylum in India after her parents and almost all family members were murdered in 1975, and she lived there until 1981. In that year, in her absence, she was elected chair of the Awami League.

On 17 May 1981 Sheik Hasina was moving home. Thousands of people waiting for Farm Gate and Manik Miah Avenue at the Airport welcomed her.

She was elected to parliament from three constituencies during the 1986 national elections. She was elected Leader of the Opposition in the House after the overthrow of autocracy in 1990.

In 1996 Sheik Hasina led the Awami League 21 years after the assassination of Bangabandhu and helped the party gain power and become prime minister of the country.

In the event of the Awami League Rally in Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital city grenading, Sheik Hasina, the former opposition leader, avoided an attempt at her life on August 21, 2004.

On January 5, 2014, she was elected prime minister for the second time in a row.
