On Thursday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the distribution of free textbooks for the academic year 2021 to students up to the secondary level.

Through a virtual event from her official residence in Ganabhaban in the capital, the premier handed over the books to some primary and secondary level students while ministers and secretaries were present at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center auditorium in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar district.

The government is handing over new books free of charge to around 4.5 crore students at the beginning of New Year in the coronavirus (COVID-19) scenario.

The delivery of books will begin at educational institutions across the country on January 1, 2021.

After that, in the next twelve days, new books will be distributed in stages to students in the sixth to nine grades.

There is no book festival on January 1 due to the closing of educational institutions in the midst of the pandemic of COVID-19.
