Independent councilor candidate’s body recovered in Jhenidah

In Jhenidah's Shailakupa upazila early on Thursday, five hours after the brother of an Awami League councillor candidate was hacked to death by rivals in the city, the body of an independent councillor candidate was recovered.

In the upcoming Shailakupa municipality election, the deceased was named as Alamgir Hossain Babu, an independent candidate for ward 8.

The body was recovered at approximately 1:00am from the Debtola River in the city.

Earlier, on Wednesday evening, Boltu Hossain, 50, Shawkat Hossain's younger brother, was hacked to death.

Jahangir Alam, the officer in charge of the Shailakupa Police Station, said that a group of supporters of another candidate for councilor, Alamgir Hossain, swooped on Boltu at around 7:00 p.m. at his brother Shawkat's election campaign office in the Kabirpur area.

Boltu was struck with lethal weapons by the attackers, leaving him seriously wounded, he said.

Taposh Kumar Sarker, resident medical officer of the hospital, said that the injured man was taken to Kushtia Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead at around 9:30pm.
