Govt takes largest ever project for saving environment: Shahab Uddin

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Shahab Uddin today said the government is working tirelessly for ensuring a better environment in the country keeping pace with the rapid urbanisation and industrialisation.

“The largest transformational project ever taken on environmental conservation titled ‘Bangladesh Environmental Sustainability and Transformation (BEST)’ is going to be developed with the help of the World Bank aiming to make a great difference in the quality of environment,” he told a workshop. The inception workshop on preparation of Bangladesh Environmental Sustainability and Transformation (BEST) project was held at Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka, a ministry press release said.

Speaking as the chief guest, Shahab Uddin said the project will play a vital role in improving the country’s overall environment, including air quality, water quality and waste management. He said the development of this transformational project will also help strengthen the capacity of the Department of Environment (DoE) and other relevant agencies.

The project will address the climate change impacts and growing environmental problems with a comprehensive and integrated approach of investment, the environment minister said. He said the BEST project will be implemented successfully with the active participation of various ministries, including the local government, industries, communication and health ministries, and other agencies concerned.

Shahab Uddin said with support from the World Bank, the government will be able to create a desirable outcome of living in a healthy environment. He said the project activities such as — reducing the problems of air pollution, water pollution, wastes and institutional capacity development — will help ensure a better environment as well as the overall well-being of people in the country.

Chaired by Environment, Forest and Climate Change Secretary Ziaul Hasan, the workshop was attended, among others, by Deputy Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Begum Habibun Nahar, Additional Secretary of the Local Government Division Moron Kumar Chakraborty, Additional Secretary of the Industries Ministry Md Jafarullah, Additional Secretary of the Health Service Division Kazi Zebunnesa, DoE Director General Dr AKM Rafique Ahammed and World Bank Senior Environment Specialist Jaing Ru and Suiko Yoshijima.
