Manikganj fisheries department seizes 6.2 lakh meter current nets

The fisheries department has seized around 6.2 lakh meter current nets and 828-kg of hilsha in the last few days here as the nationwide 22-day ban on hilsha catching is ongoing since October 4.

Fisheries officials said the use of current nets and capturing of hilsha is totally prohibited during the ban, going to be end on October 25.

The ban during this period is announced every year as the time is touted the breeding season for hilsha, they said.

The current nets and hilsha fishes were seized conducting drives in different places of Padma and Jamuna rivers, an official said.

District fisheries officer Sayfur Rahman said a total of 149 special drives and 34 mobile courts were conducted in different points of the Padma and the Jamuna rivers from the very beginning of the ban on catching hilsha fish.

The seized nets were destroyed during the drives.

The mobile courts so far fined Taka 1.62 lakh and jailed 36 fishermen for catching mother hilsha during the time.
