SC orders 4 Cox's Bazar temple attack accused to surrender

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today ordered four accused in a temple attack case in Pekua, Cox's Bazar, who were granted anticipatory bail by the High Court to surrender before the lower court concerned.

The Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order, dismissing a petition of the accused, pleading to revise the order of the chamber judge court to surrender the accused.

Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal argued for the defence in the case, while Attorney General AM Amin Uddin and Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath stood for the state.

The Durga Temple in Pekua, Cox's Bazar was attacked by miscreants on October 13, 2021, and was vandalized. The case was filed on October 15.

Of the accused, Pekua Sadar Union Parishad Chairman and upazila BNP president Bahadur Shah, upazila Jubo Dal president Kamran Jadid, ward council member Sazzad and BNP activist and businessman Shahnewaj Ajad pleaded for anticipatory bail before the High Court.

The High Court on October 28, granted them anticipatory bail till December 5, making the state to appeal against the order. 

After holding hearing on a state plea, the Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court on October 31 had ordered the accused to surrender within a week.
