Gazi Abdul Mannan, who was convicted with death penalty on charges of crimes against humanity in Kishoreganj during the liberation war of 1971, died in Narayanganj on Monday.

The convict was absconding since 2015 when warrant for arrest was issued for his trial by the International Crimes Tribunal.

The police quoting his son Azizul Haque said Mannan died at one of his relatives' residence in Kanchpur area of Rupganj, Narayanganj, in the morning.

Officer in charge of Karimganj police station, Kishoreganj, Jakir Rabbani confirmed the death news.

Mannan was a member of Pakistan's para-military Razakar force, a key collaborator of the occupation army, during Bangladesh's liberation war in 1971. He was known to be a commander of the Razakar force in Kishoreganj.

On 3 May, the ICT awarded death penalty to four people including Mannan and sentenced another to suffer in jail unto death for committing crimes against humanity during the liberation war in Kishoreganj’s Karimganj.

The verdict was delivered by a three-member ICT bench, led by its chairman justice M Anwarul Haque.

Apart from Mannan, lawyer Shamsuddin Ahmed, his brother captain (retd) Nasiruddin Ahmed and Hafiz Uddin got death penalty. Azharul Islam was given jail unto death.

The five accused faced charges of crimes on seven counts, such as murder, mass killing, torture, abduction and arson.

On 13 May 2015, the tribunal took into cognizance the charges against the five accused.

This was the 23rd verdict on crimes against humanity since the ICT was formed after the ruling Awami League assumed office in 2009.
