President for creating awareness about mental depression

President Abdul Hamid today called for creating awareness about depression related mental problems.

"Mental health care is equally important like physical health care," he said in a message on the eve of the "World Health Day."

The day will be observed tomorrow with the theme- "Depression- Let's Talk".

President Hamid said the government is implementing various programmes for the overall development of the health sector along with education, food security, nutrition and sanitation system in a bid to reach health services to the people's doorsteps.

"Different pragmatic steps of the incumbent government helped enhance the average life expectancy, reduce maternal and child mortality rates, increased nutrition standard and workability of citizens," he said.

The President said the importance of physical and mental fitness of every citizen is immense to sustain the ongoing development in the country.

Abdul Hamid said like in other countries, many people in Bangladesh are suffering from mental depression.

According to experts, personal and familial problems, natural and manmade disasters, unplanned urbanization, socio-economic condition, mental pressure and genetic causes s are among the reasons of the rise in mental diseases, he added.

The President hoped that the programmes of the World Health Day would create awareness about mental health as well as the mental depression among the mass people.

He wished overall success of the day's programmes.
