Inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque on Saturday expressed doubts about authenticity of the case of reported abduction of poet, essayist and political commentator Farhad Mazhar last week.

"There is no confirmed information that he (Farhad Mazhar) was really abducted," he told newsmen after attending an event on awareness about narcotics in the city's Diploma Engineers' Institute.

The top police official, however, said, "The incident is being thogoughly investigated."

Unidentified persons picked up Farhad Mazhar from near his Shyamoli residence in Dhaka on Monday morning and he was rescued from Jessore after 18 hours.

In the evening when he was rescued, another top official of the police in Khulna termed his disappearance voluntary, saying that it appeared that the writer went to Khulna voluntarily as he did not forget to carry his personal belongings.

However, the home minister later said the government did not find any fault of Farhad Mazhar so far.

On Wednesday, Asaduzzaman Khan said the matter being was investigated.

The focus of the investigation is whether he alone went out of his house or anyone called him out, the minister said.
