In the three months to September, the UK unemployment rate rose to 4.8 percent , up from 4.5 percent, as the coronavirus started to reach the job market.

In the same period, redundancies increased to a record high of 314,000, said the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

In anticipation of the end of the furlough scheme, which was initially expected to finish at the end of October, businesses made further staff redundant.

It has now been extended to the end of March, according to the BBC.

In order to save some jobs, economists said the extension had come "too late in the day" and more significant increases in unemployment were likely in the coming months.
