Two cases of COVID-19 Omicron variant detected in Bangladesh

Bangladesh today confirmed two positive cases of COVID-19 Omicron variant for the first time after the new coronavirus variant was found in different countries of the world.

"Two female cricketers of the Bangladesh Cricket Team have tested positive for COVID-19 Omicron variant. They (the cricketers) returned to the country from Zimbabwe recently," Director General of Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) Prof Dr Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam told BSS this evening. 

Both the cricketers are in isolation at a city hotel, he said adding one is 21 years old and another is 30. 

On November 25, 2021, scientists in South Africa detected a new Covid-19 variant (Omicron) with multiple mutations. 

On November 26, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the recently-discovered B.1.1.529 strain of Covid-19, first detected in southern Africa, to be a variant of concern.
